PIECE OF CRAP - SAVE YOUR MONEY!2010-08-311 / 5
Didn't even get an hour out of town and the metal supports/bars came loose causing all of our luggage to fall onto the freeway. I read some of the reviews before purchasing, and because of those we added extra tie downs & supports, but the supid thing still broke. If I could I'd give this piece of crap zero stars!!! Save your money & sanity.
Adequate with limitations2010-08-033 / 5
We purchased this rack to transport a Porta-Bote which weighs approximately 60#. The bars can handle the weight, but the clips which attach to the sides of the car above the window are inadequate to secure the bars. (We have a Chevy Malibu). The clips are too short as they come around the upper edge of the door opening. We had a similar rack from another manufacturer a few years back and the clips were much more substantial. To compensate for the flimsy clips, we ran ratchet straps completely around the racks, the boat and through the windows into the car to hold everything tight. The only problem is, when you run straps through the car and it rains, the water wicks into the car. We found out the hard way and lost some silk lamp shades in the process. Live and learn! Final word....they worked okay for the price and they worked better with a little ingenuity.
Great for occasional use2010-07-284 / 5
We use these car top bars a few times a year. Primarily we use it to attach a soft top carrier when the family goes on longer trips and needs more storage space. I've also used it to haul a 150 lb full size filing cabinet. It worked fine for both cases.

They're fairly quick to attach (5 - 10 minutes), but you do need to be sure to take a wet paper towel to the area on your roof that they will rest on, otherwise you will get scratches on your roof. This occurs because no matter how tight you pull the straps, the bars are going to vibrate.

This is a good cheap solution. If you plan to use the bars more than occasionally, you should install permanent bars, as these are just too flimsy for everyday use.

Note that on my 1998 Honda Accord, the clips don't fit exactly right, so I have to rig it a little. It's not a big deal, again, because I only use it occasionally.
Does the job and then some!2010-07-234 / 5
This is the second Highland cartop carrier I've purchased, the first one served me well for years before finally succumbing to over loading and the elements (rust). It was my fault the first one didn't last longer though. It made it through a cross country trip, very overloaded and performed like a champ! The thing felt very secure (though I have an unorthodox set up that pretty much clamped the carrier straps inside the car).

The new carrier I just is not "textured" like the older one (though they are listed as the same model) and the clips are different (thankfully they still fit my car). The lack of textured finish on the metal means I scratched it the very first day as I was putting it together, which is a big minus for the newer design. Even with the changes on the "new" model I'm quite confident that it will last just as long (or longer) than my old one. Sure, you'll probably get a better fitting and performing carrier if you want to drop a couple of hundred bucks more for a custom carrier matched to your specific vehicle, but as long as the carrier fits your vehicle, you won't find another one for close to this price!

This little carrier has done everything I've asked of it and I'm very satisfied with my purchase both times.
its okay2010-07-133 / 5
yea... what can i say it is okay product for short distance. if you are thinking about carrying a kayak on top of it, you also need to buy "kayak carreir" and install on top of this bars. or you can just buy a noodle for swimming for little kid and put them in the bar too but you gotta becareful if you are using noodle, even with me strapping the kayak with the heavy duty straps it is not for long drive.

just use it for short distance driving.

and one more thing. when i first bought this bars, i installed it in my car and it kept on moving as i shake them to make sure if they are snugged in prorperly. just make sure you pull the strap up, toward you and down. until the bars are snugged in properly and doesn't move any more
